Too busy to eat right

Renee is a busy business professional. Though her children are grown, her life has not slowed down. In addition to her career, she has a schedule filled with teaching classes, performing in local theater and church and community commitments. This hectic schedule made it difficult for Renee to take proper care of herself and it began to take a toll on her health.

“My life became so busy that most days I was grabbing fast food on my way home or between appointments because I didn’t have the time or energy to fix a real meal. And when I did buy groceries, it was all processed foods — a lot of junk and sweet stuff. It was all about convenience.”

Renee found that not only was she struggling to find the energy to get through her day, her overall health was also beginning to show the effects of her poor lifestyle. “It wasn’t just the weight gain. I didn’t feel good anymore,” Renee stated. “My 'normal' became acid reflux, bloating, sluggishness and a lot of digestive issues. I couldn’t get a good night’s sleep because I’d wake up with acid reflux and indigestion. My skin and my hair weren’t as healthy as they used to be and I really began to look and feel old. I didn’t like myself and started to withdraw more and more.”

Time for a change

Renee worried that she might experience the same health problems such as diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease and mobility issues she saw others struggling with as they aged. She knew she needed to make some changes or her own health would keep declining. “I didn’t want to try another diet because they were always so restrictive and left me hungry all the time. Not to mention, I always gained the weight back — plus a few more pounds.”

Renee discussed some of her frustrations and health concerns with Dr. Brian Rodgers at BodyRenu. Together, Dr. Rodgers and Renee reviewed her lab work and the results of a BIA (Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis) she had done at his clinic. The tests revealed increased toxin levels, insulin resistance and gluten intolerance. Like most Americans, Renee’s lifestyle choices were increasing her risk of chronic illness and lowering her quality of life. It was determined that Renee would benefit from the FirstLine Therapy program, a lifestyle modification program offered by BodyRenu.

Beginning a journey of health

Incorporating a team approach, Dr. Rodgers, Renee and the clinic’s health coach developed an individualized plan for Renee that addressed her particular health needs. The plan included ridding her body of toxins, getting the proper nutrition that included an individualized eating plan, supplements and medical foods. They also discussed ways to reduce stress and increase physical activity levels to help attain optimal results.

“This program was totally different than anything I had tried before,” Renee adds. “It was all about changing my lifestyle." She wasn’t stuck eating some expensive packaged diet foods at each meal. Instead, she learned which foods to buy at the grocery store and how many servings she should have each day. "I planned ahead and prepped my own meals and I was actually having fun trying new foods and learning to cook healthy recipes. I even learned how to make the right choices when I did have the occasional meal out. My health coach helped me set goals to get more exercise, and even relax more and take care of myself.”

During her eight-week program, Renee quickly began to see the changes she had been hoping for. She shed 19 pounds, reduced her body fat by 7 percent, lowered her BMI (body mass index) and increased her total body water levels. Renee adds, “I don’t have the acid reflux, bloating, or gut issues anymore, I’m sleeping better and I have more energy. And I even reduced my risk of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.”

Continuing the journey

Renee continues to see positive changes as a result of the new lifestyle she’s adopted. “With everything I’ve learned and the habits I’ve developed, it’s been easy to keep making healthy choices even after the program ended. I love how much better I look and feel and others are noticing the difference, too. I feel like I’ve been given a new lease on life and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me!”
