OAKMONT, Pa. — Daniel Summerhays’ up-and-down run at the U.S. Open’s third round was suspended due to darkness.

The former BYU golfer who shot a tournament-low round Friday carded four bogeys with just two birdies to sit tied for eighth and six shots off the lead through 14 holes when played was suspended Saturday at Oakmont Country Club.

Summerhays was tied with Jason Day, Bryson DeChambeau and Zach Johnson when the tournament announced the delay with the leaders on Nos. 12 and 13.

The Farmington native took a bogey on the par-4 first hole, but got the stroke back with a long birdie putt on the par-5, 609-yard No. 4. He added a bogey on No. 7, paired it with a birdie on the par-3 eighth hole, and made the turn at even-par in the third round.

Through four holes on the back nine, Summerhays struck bogeys on Nos. 10 and 12 with pars on 11, 13 and 14 before retiring for the evening. He will resume with the rest of the field early Sunday morning, when the U.S. Golf Association will try to play the remainder of the third round and the final round in the storm-ravaged major tournament.

Lehi’s Tony Finau did not make the cut after each golfer finished the second round early Saturday morning. The West High product carded a two-day total of 7-over-par 147 to barely miss the cut alongside Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, among others.

Shane Lowry blew through the front-nine to make the biggest move in Saturday’s third round. The Irishman, who has never finished better than ninth at a major championship, carded birdies on Nos. 4, 6, 7 and 9 to take a 2-under 33 into the turn, and added a birdie on the 12th hole to take the top spot on the leaderboard. Andrew Landry was even-par through 12 holes for second place, and Lee Westwood used an eagle on the par-4 fifth hole to finish tied for third with Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson at the break — just three shots ahead of Summerhays.
