THE GREAT OUTDOORS — If you don’t have a fishing license, but still want to get out on the water and catch some fish, plan a trip for June 11.

The annual free fishing day in Utah will be held on Saturday, June 11. On that day, anglers can fish anywhere in the state without paying for a fishing license. The no-fee day offers a great opportunity to try out fishing for the first time or to introduce others to the sport, Division of Wildlife Resources Aquatic Section Chief Drew Cushing said.

“Fishing is a great way to escape the hectic pace of life and relax,” Cushing said. “It’s a fun activity, and it’s probably closer to your home than you think. Many Utahns are surprised to learn how many good fishing waters are only a short drive from their house.”

Cushing said June is a great time for the free fishing day because not only is the weather usually great, but it is also a prime time to fish for warm-water species, including bluegill, catfish, smallmouth and largemouth bass.

While they do attract a lot of anglers, Utah’s community fishing ponds are a great place to fish on free fishing day, Cushing said. Before June 11, channel catfish up to 18 inches long will be stocked into the various community ponds around the state.

“Catfish are known for their fighting ability,” Cushing said. “When a catfish takes your bait, it will hug the bottom and fight being caught. Catch one of these cats, and you’ll have a fun fight on your hands.”

There are 50 community fishing ponds located throughout Utah. Click here for the full list and directions.

Along with fishing for free on June 11, people can also attend the third annual Outdoor Adventure Days. The free event will be held June 10-11 at the Lee Kay Public Shooting Range at 6000 W. 2100 South in Salt Lake City. People will have the opportunity to try out kayaking, paddleboarding, drive an ATV on a riding course, shoot a variety of firearms or a bow and arrow, and watch trained hunting dogs in action.

“Gov. Herbert has declared June Great Outdoors Month in Utah,” DWR special events coordinator Trish Engel said. “Outdoor Adventure Days is a perfect way to get a taste for what Utah’s outdoors has to offer.”
