PROVO CANYON — A 12-year-old boy was rescued after a “football-sized” rock fell on his head near Bridal Veil Falls Monday evening.

The boy had a 3 to 4-inch gash on his head, but was conscious, breathing and alert, according to Sgt. Spencer Cannon of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. Search and rescue teams responded to the area to carry the boy down from a cliff using a series of anchoring systems.

Investigators said they believe the rock fell about 5 feet before hitting the boy’s head. He was transported to Utah Valley Hospital in fair condition.

Search and rescue teams also responded to Holbrook Canyon in Bountiful Monday. A man was transported to the hospital by a medical helicopter after falling about 20 feet off a rock, according to the South Davis Metro Fire Agency. He reportedly sustained "traumatic injuries."
