HEBER CITY — A six-hour SWAT situation ended with one man dead in Heber City Monday morning.

Officers responded to a home near 200 West and Center Street around 2 a.m., according to Heber police. The person who contacted police said a man had drugged and sexually assaulted a teenager and when confronted, the alleged abuser pulled a gun on two people in the home.

A woman, two teenagers and a 5-year-old child safely exited the home. A man remained barricaded inside the residence.

SWAT arrived and tried to negotiate with the man for several hours, then used tear gas and explosions to enter the residence. Officers found a man, 47-year-old James Leo Veyette, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police had evacuated neighboring homes and asked other residents to shelter in place. The evacuation order has been lifted but traffic in the area was still being rerouted around the scene of the investigation.
