SALT LAKE CITY — If you want to take two favorite desserts and combine them to wow your neighbors, try this week’s featured Pinterest recipe.

Just like you, we at KSL.com want to know what recipes are keepers and the ones that need to be buried deep within the depths of the internet. Fortunately for you, the KSL.com team is going to try out various recipes we find on Pinterest (or ones sent to us), make them exactly as described and then write about the experience.

Each of us on the KSL.com team has varying degrees of interest and skill levels when making and preparing food. Basically, what I'm saying is we’re not pros, which makes us just average people trying to make delicious food and hope it turns out well in the process. Will we fail at some recipes? Sure. Will some of the recipes fail us? Oh, most definitely. Hopefully, though, we can find some great recipes to try or to have a better sense of the ones to avoid.

If you have a recipe you'd like us to consider, send the Pinterest link(s) to kslweb@ksl.com. We have a Pinterest board where you can see all the recipes we’re considering.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Brownies

As the name suggests, this dessert is a fudgy brownie with a thick layer of cookie dough stacked on top. However, those of you concerned about eating raw eggs in your cookie dough don’t have to worry — the cookie dough portion of the recipe is eggless, making it perfectly safe for consumption.

Now, you may be thinking, “Cookie dough AND brownies in one dessert? That sounds really sweet.” Well, you would be right. It is definitely very rich and very sweet so you won’t be able to eat a lot of this dessert in one sitting. So if you are looking for a treat to binge on, this is not the recipe for you.

Ingredient list for the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Brownies:
Brownie
  • 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1 cup salted butter, melted
  • 2 cups light brown sugar, packed
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
Cookie dough:
  • 1 cup salted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cups + 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups miniature chocolate chips

With that said, the recipe is pretty tasty and maybe smaller portions aren’t such a bad thing. Just share it with some neighbors when you get your fill of the sugary snack.

The recipe calls for your basic baking ingredients, so as long as you have your flour, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, etc. on hand, you are good to go. The two items that you might not already have stocked in your cupboards are mini chocolate chips and salted butter (I only had unsalted butter, but then again, I don’t bake very often. And by very often, I mean almost never.)

Now, the Recipe Girl says that the dessert prep time only takes “30 minutes plus cooling time,” but I found that to be a bit misleading. Granted, I’m no master chef, but it took me closer to an hour to get all the ingredients out, measured and mixed into the right bowls. It takes a bit longer than a normal dessert because you are essentially making two desserts in one. So just be aware of that if you are hoping to make it before a get-together, give yourself plenty of time.

Aside from having to measure and mix two desserts, you also have double the cooling time. The recipe requires you to mix, pour in a pan and then bake the brownie portion. Then you have to wait a while (it took me 25 minutes in the freezer) for the brownies to cool down enough to put the cookie dough on top. However, you also have to let the cookie dough chill in the fridge for about 15 minutes so that it’s easier to spread on top of the brownies. Like I said, this is a fairly time-consuming recipe (obviously it’s not as hard as Baked Alaska, but don’t expect it to be super quick).

The recipe also calls for drizzling melted chocolate on top of the cookie dough layer, and while it just seems like one extra step to an already sweet dessert, I would definitely recommend doing it.

I should also note that the recipe gives two options for cookie dough and I took the second option that gives a thicker layer of cookie dough. If you don’t want as much sweetness, you could use the first option that gives a thinner layer, but just know that my video and the ingredients list in this article are for the second cookie dough ingredient list.

This dessert is tasty whether you eat it right after baking or a day later. As long as you keep it covered in something fairly airtight, the cookie dough stays pretty soft.

Overall, I would rank this as a good Pinterest recipe. It takes a little while, but it’s easy to make and tastes great.
