10 organizations providing meals, groceries for needy during Thanksgiving

SALT LAKE CITY — Everyone deserves a delicious, warm meal on Thanksgiving, but not everyone can afford it.

Several local organizations recognize this fact and have ensured those in need are able to receive a meal or some groceries this holiday.

If you or someone you know are in need of a meal this week, the following list provides the resources that can help out.

The Rescue Mission of Salt Lake: A Thanksgiving dinner will be provided free of charge from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at 463 S. 400 West.

Crossroads Urban Center: Free Thanksgiving turkeys will be given out from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or whenever they are gone Nov. 25 at the Urban Indian Center located at 120 W. 1300 South. Identification will need to be provided for each household member. The organization would like picture identification for adults ages 18 and older, including a driver's license, a passport, a state identification or an employee identification. Children's identification can include a birth certificate, a medical card, a passport, an immunization card, a report card with the address of a parent or a state identification.

St. Joseph's food pantry: St. Joseph's assists people in need of groceries throughout the year. For those in need of food this week, the St. Joseph's food pantry will provide groceries from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at 7405 Redwood Road with a picture identification.

Good Samaritan Program: The Good Samaritan Program sack lunch program is available from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily at the northwest corner of South Temple and C Street. For those wishing to pick up some extra pantry items this week, there are limited items available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The Greek Orthodox Church of Greater Salt Lake: The church is holding its annual free Thanksgiving dinner from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at 279 S. 300 West.

The Salt Lake City Mission: The Salt Lake City Mission is providing two opportunities for a Thanksgiving meal. Its Thanksgiving meal will be held from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Christian Life Center located at 1051 North Redwood Road. Those who are interested in signing up for a Thanksgiving food box with turkey and vegetables can sign up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at 1151 North Redwood Road Suite 106.

Utah Pride Center: Anyone is invited to attend a Thanksgiving potluck from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at 255 E. 400 South. The center will provide turkey, tofurkey and ham, and guests are invited to bring a dish if they would like.

The Church at Liberty Park: The Church at Liberty Park will host its Thanksgiving Day Outreach from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at 662 E. 1300 South. Everyone who walks through the door will be served, but it's best to make a reservation by calling 801-973-0088 ext. 3 and leaving a message with their first and last name and the number of people who will be in their party.

The Genesis Project: The Genesis Project is hosting a Thanksgiving dinner at 6 p.m. Wednesday at 3525 Riverdale Road. The organization will provide transportation for those staying at Ogden Rescue Mission, the Lantern House, the Weber County Library and some residents staying in low-income housing.

The Dairy Delight: The Dairy Delight is giving away free Thanksgiving dinner between 4 and 6 p.m. Tuesday at 46 West 100 South in Tooele. They have taken reservations, but people are also welcome to walk in for the meal. The company is also delivering meals to the elderly and homebound. Those interested in having a meal delivered can call 435-882-6400 before 4 p.m.
