DENVER (AP) — Marcus Byrd scored 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting to help Denver beat Utah Valley 75-62 on Wednesday night.
Duke Douglas and Nate Engesser each finished with 11 points and C.J. Bobbitt added 10 points and six boards for the Pioneers (2-1).
Denver, which never trailed in the game, opened on a 14-2 run of which Byrd contributed 7 of his 14 total points. The Pioneers held a 45-33 lead at halftime.
Denver kept the pressure on early in the second half scoring seven of the first 11 points out of the break, capped off by a Jake Holtzmann jumper, to open up a 15 point advantage (52-37). Two Byrd free throws six minutes later pushed the lead to 65-47, the largest of the game.
Konner Frey scored 15 and added 12 rebounds to lead Utah Valley (1-1). Jaden Jackson and Darrious Hamilton each had 12 points for the Wolverines.
