WEST VALLEY CITY — It's been a long time since 15-year-old Shylo brushed a horse.
On Wednesday she picked up a brush at The Stable Place in West Valley City. She admits talking about her painful past is not easy.
"I'm not from Utah at all," said Shylo.
She grew up in rural Tennessee.
"My aunt used to have 20 horses," she said. "We'd go over there and ride them every single day."
She didn't just ride them; Shylo says she helped rehabilitate horses no one wanted.
"It's just like a family tradition where we help horses out that got abused," she said.
A few years ago, that all changed. Shylo's dad died and she lost contact with her mom.
"Somewhere," she said. "I have no idea."
It's difficult for her to admit, but now she's the one who needs help. Right now, home is nowhere near Tennessee or the horses she loved so much.
"I'm staying in a group home," she said. She lives with a number of other children also in foster care.
"I got threatened a few weeks ago," she said.
She longs for a more peaceful, simple life, but most of all, she longs for parents.
"(I want them to be) loving and they care," she said.
She's hoping for adoption and to find a family that truly fits.
