EMIGRATION CANYON — Police arrested two women in connection with a rash of thefts in which mail, IDs and other documentation were stolen, but a man who may be involved remains on the loose.

The investigation into the thefts began Thursday when a Unified Police Department officer responded to a report of a vehicle burglary in Neff's Canyon. Police connected a white Tahoe or Yukon SUV with a broken rear side window with the burglary.

A credit card that belonged to the burglarized car's owner was later used at Smith's in Millcreek and a car matching the SUV's description was seen there, Unified Police Department reported.

Police then received a call from Salt Lake Watershed saying an employee at Little Dell Reservoir observed a white Yukon with a broken window being spray painted black. Police responded as the Yukon headed up Pine Crest Canyon.

Unmarked detectives following the vehicle saw two women breaking into mailboxes and stealing mail, police said.

In an effort to avoid a pursuit, officers laid spikes for the vehicle as it traveled to Emigration Canyon. There, all four tires on the Yukon were spiked and officers began following the vehicle at that time, warning drivers and bicyclists.

The Yukon eventually lost all its tires and crashed into a creek embankment at 5730 E. Emigration Canyon. The two women, Anna C. Roberts and Emilee Layba, ran into the creek on foot, but were quickly apprehended, police said.

Police reported that the Yukon was stolen out of the Salt Lake City area the day before. Inside the vehicle, police found a duffel bag of mail belonging to approximately 20 people, stolen IDs, passports, vehicle titles and bank records.

Later, police discovered that a man was with Roberts and Layba when they entered Pine Crest Canyon but stole a red Subaru Forester, leaving the canyon before the Tahoe did.

Anyone with information about the thefts or Subaru is asked to call Unified Police Department at 801-743-7000.
