HYRUM STATE PARK — Located about 10 miles from Logan, Hyrum State Park is an excellent destination for fishing, boating and camping.

The Hyrum Reservoir and dam were built in 1935 and the area was later established as a state park in 1959, according to park manager Chris Bradshaw. Mormon pioneers settled the Cache County Valley and the city and state park were named after Hyrum Smith, the brother of the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Hyrum State Park offers year-round fishing, which is arguably its most popular attraction, Bradshaw said. The reservoir is 480 surface acres and has a ramp available for motorized boats. There are a variety of fish including rainbow and brown trout, perch, bluegill and largemouth bass. The Division of Wildlife Resources stocks the reservoir annually, typically in the spring and fall.

A new fishing dock is being installed at the reservoir and should be completed by Thursday, Bradshaw said.

The park holds a fishing contest each fall that allows fishers to win prizes if they catch a tagged fish. This year's event will be held Sept. 1 through Oct. 31 and does not require an entry fee, Bradshaw said. However, anglers must have a valid fishing license.

If an angler catches a tagged fish, they can take it to the state park office and claim a prize. Prizes are donated by local businesses and include Camp Chef stoves, life jackets, gift certificates to local restaurants and cash.

When the reservoir freezes over in the winter, ice fishing is also very popular at Hyrum Reservoir, Bradshaw said.

During the summer, the park also offers camping with 32 sites, 10 of which have water and electric hookups for RVs and trailers. A large group site is also available and can accommodate 100-150 people. The large group site also offers a pavilion with electricity and lights and restroom facility.

A smaller group site was recently added to the park and accommodates around 24 campers, Bradshaw said. Two cabins are also available for rent. Each sleeps up to eight people and has a refrigerator and microwave. Bradshaw said the park plans to renovate the cabins soon and add a TV and DVD player.

However, if camping and fishing aren't your forte, Bradshaw said many visitors enjoy having a picnic on the grass near the sandy beach east of the main marina. Restrooms are available by the parking lot.
