SALT LAKE CITY — Russell M. Nelson has been set apart as the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reported Wednesday.

Now referred to as President Russell M. Nelson, the apostle is assuming the position previously held by the recently deceased President Boyd K. Packer.

President Nelson has been in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since April of 1984, making him the most senior apostle out of his fellow brethren.

"It is the Church's practice that the senior member by date of assignment to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles becomes quorum president," the Church said in a statement.

LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson set Nelson apart to the calling.
