SCIPIO — I-15 near Scipio has been reopened after a fire closed the freeway in both directions for an hour Friday evening.

The fire was started by lightning around 7 p.m. and by almost 10 p.m., had grown to 300 acres, officials said. The fire is located about two miles south of Scipio and is not currently threatening any homes.

However, the fire was affecting the roadway so I-15 was closed as a precaution for about an hour, according to Utah Department of Transportation. Northbound and southbound lanes were reopened around 9 p.m.

The fire behavior began decreasing as the evening temperatures began dropping and crews are working to get the wildfire contained. Crews using both fire engines and planes worked to slow the blaze from reaching power lines using water and fire retardant, fire officials said.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
