SALT LAKE CITY — It's a first-ever in Salt Lake City — a new community event called Yoga Rocks the Park. The goal of the program, which has a presence in seven other U.S. cities, is to create a peaceful community environment for yoga lovers of all skill sets to gather together on select Sundays during the summer.

Liberty Park is normally bustling with activity, but it was taken over Sunday by an event with a different energy. Instead of dog walkers, there were downward-dogs and other yoga poses as people filled the park.

“I’m looking forward to meeting new people, getting good practice in,” said yoga enthusiast Matthew Melville. “(And) just enjoying the company of some of my other yoga friends here.”

Organizers hope all the twists and bends won’t intimidate beginners, emphasizing yoga is for everybody. Not even a mat is required for practice. They hope the event attracts the young, old and everyone in between who can benefit from the weekly activity.

They also offer kids' programs so families can participate together. Children ages 3-10 can attend and have their own yoga experience.

“We have such beautiful summer weather here,” said event attendee Kevin White. “And why not do something I love outside, rather than inside. I think it’s just a beautiful place to be.”

Yoga Rocks the Park takes place July 26, August 16, August 23, August 30, September 13, and September 20.
