SALT LAKE CITY — An 84-year-old man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a rollover accident, police said.

The Salt Lake County man, Scott H. Johnson, was driving a red Toyota pickup truck eastbound at about 2:30 p.m. when he somehow lost control and drove into the westbound lanes, according to Unified Police detective Ken Hansen.

He then drove onto the sidewalk and front lawn of the Unified Fire Authority Station 106, hitting the front part of the station, then continued on and flipped, landing just east of the fire station at 1885 E. 3300 South, Hansen said.

Firefighters in the station provided first aid, Hansen said.

The man died on scene, police said.

The vehicle did not collide with any vehicles or pedestrians in the westbound lane. The vehicle hit a lot of landscaping rocks, causing a significant amount of damage, Hansen said.

It is too soon to determine if drugs, alcohol or a medical condition caused the accident. Hansen said it will be a week or so before it is determined, Hansen said.

Editor's note: Police originally reported the man as being 70 years old. They later said he is 84.
