OGDEN — NBA All-Star Damian Lillard will deliver the commencement address at Weber State University on May 1.

The popular guard for the Portland Trail Blazers and former Weber State star basketball player will take part in three events this weekend, where he'll deliver the commencement address Friday at 8 a.m. before the university’s largest graduating class, according to the university.

Lillard, too, will be receiving his diploma after completing his degree in professional sales in the College of Applied Science & Technology. Lillard was six credits short of graduating when drafted by the Trail Blazers in 2012 and has since completed his degree in the offseason.

Tickets are not required to attend the commencement ceremony. Weber will also have a live stream of the event for those who cannot attend.

Weber State expects more than 5,337 graduates in its class of 2014-15, with 3,053 candidates being honored at the university's 145th commencement, according to a university press release.

Since leaving Weber State, Lillard has been an active participant in Weber State athletics, helping whenever he can. In January, Lillard and his sponsor Adidas released a pair of Weber State branded shoes, featuring purple suede and a rap lyric that ends with “you bleed purple” inside the shoe. Lillard donated the shoes to each player on the current basketball team.

The Trail Blazers were eliminated from the NBA playoffs Wednesday night, losing 99-93 to the Memphis Grizzlies. The loss granted Weber State the opportunity to have Lillard participate in its commencement proceedings.
