SANPETE COUNTY — A chocolate lab that was shot twice in the head and left to die has recovered and was adopted, according to a Sanpete County animal rescue employee.

A chocolate lab was found Feb. 23 in the foothills of Sanpete County with two gunshot wounds in the head, according to Wag-N-Train Dog Rescue co-founder Jamee Wheelwright. A man was hunting for antler sheds when he located the wounded animal and discovered it had recently given birth.

The dog, who rescuers named Karma, was taken to a local animal control officer and was later transported to the emergency center at Payson Family Pet Hospital, Wheelwright said. Karma had a violent seizure after being admitted to the pet hospital, but was later transported to the Rescue Rovers Dog Adoption agency in Salt Lake City, according to Rescue Rover adoptions coordinator Debbie Welder.

Karma made a miraculous recovery and was adopted by a family in Clinton on March 16, Welder said.

On Feb. 27, the Humane Society of Utah offered a $5,000 reward to anyone who could provide information that would lead to the arrest of the person who shot Karma. The shooter was never identified, but Rescue Rovers and Wag-N-Train gave a monetary reward to the man who they credit with saving Karma’s life.

“We never did catch the person who did this,” she said. “But, we did present the young man who found her with a check as a thank you.”
