DAVIS COUNTY — A 2-year-old boy beloved by law enforcement officers and his community died from a genetic disorder Saturday evening.

In 2014, Zac was diagnosed with GM1 gangliosidosis, a disease that destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. His father is Davis County Deputy Brett Horspool.

In November, deputies from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office raised money to help cover medical expenses by selling beard permits. Countless others from the community chipped in to support the Horspool family during the difficult time.

Family members described Zac’s passing as being bittersweet. He died at home.

“Although it was very hard to watch him take his last breath of life, we know he is in a better place and free of the pain which he has been so courageously fighting,” a post on the Zac’s Smiles Facebook page reads. “We wanted to extend our gratitude for all the prayers and thoughts in our behalf.”

Sgt. DeAnn Servey said members of the Davis County Sheriff’s Office plan to attend the funeral services in uniform Thursday. Family members suggested those who want to help consider making a donation to the Cure GM1 Foundation* in Zac’s memory.
