LOGAN — Another defensive honor was announced Friday for Utah State’s defense, which allowed only 17.1 points per game a year ago.

Aggies safety Brian Suite has been named to the 2014 watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, which is presented annually to college football’s best defensive back. Only 39 FBS players made the watch list this year, according to the National College Football Awards Association’s announcement.

Suite is the only defensive player from the state of Utah to make the list and one of five players from the Mountain West Conference. Boise State’s Donte Deayon and Jeremy Ioane, Fresno State’s Derron Smith and San Diego State’s J.J. Whittaker were also named.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior from Honolulu, Hawaii, made 77 tackles, five interceptions, two fumbles recovered and six pass breakups as a junior en route to earning all-Mountain West honorable mention honors.

The Jim Thorpe Award will be announced Dec. 11 at the Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.

The Aggies open their season Aug. 31 at Tennessee and host the home opener against Idaho State on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.
