SALT LAKE CITY — The Fourth of July is forecasted to be hot around Utah, and there will be many people outside barbecuing, swimming and enjoying the outdoors.
But what if you don't have access to a pool? There still are plenty of fun ways you can stay cool outside with just a little bit of prep.
For older kids, teens and adults:
1. Water Limbo:
What you'll need: a hose
A twist on this classic summer game, Water Limbo uses a stream of water from the hose instead of a bar. Each player takes a turn going underneath the water at the designated height. Lower the hose each round until there is a winner.
2. Water Balloon Swap
What you'll need: four laundry baskets/tubs and balloons filled with water
Two teams race against each other to see who can move water balloons from one end of the yard (or field) to the other. Each team will need a tub of water balloons on one side and an empty tub on the other side. One at a time, each player picks up a balloon and runs it to the other side. Make the game more challenging by not allowing hands.
3. Ball Blast
What you'll need: rope or something to section off grass and balls of different sizes
Section off a square piece of grass and place balls of different sizes inside. Players use a water stream for the hose to move out as many balls as they can in a time period.
4. Water Gun Tag
What you'll need: one or two water guns
This is another twist on a classic outdoor game. The person who is “it” has to hunt down his targets with a water gun filled with ice-cold water. First person to get sprayed with water becomes “it” and the contest begins again.
5. Splash Hide and Seek
What you'll need: water-filled balloons
The seeker gets to use two or three water balloons to drench the hiders when they're found.
6. Feet Freeze
What you'll need: a kiddie pool, waterproof toys/objects and ice
Fill a toddler pool with water and ice. Place different objects in the water. Players have to remove as many objects as they can using only their feet. Player with the highest number wins.
For Toddlers and Babies:
7. Tree Sprinkler
What you'll need: an old hose, scissors or knife and rope
Take an old hose and poke several holes in it. Attach it to a spigot and wrap the hose around a tree. Turn on the water and let the kids play in the sprinkler.
8. Water Stomp
What you'll need: music player, a few gallons of water
Pour water onto the cement or wood patio. Turn music on and let kids splash and dance around to the music.
