SALT LAKE CITY — Perhaps the biggest news coming out of Utah camp was that quarterback Jordan Wynn did not throw a single pass in Thursday's practice.
"A little tired arm," Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said. "There's nothing to it - he has just thrown a ton of balls this camp. (Jordan) should be fine. If we played today he would be fine to go."
Whittingham continued by saying that holding Wynn out was more precautionary, and with the home opener now two weeks away from today, the Utes don't want a chronic condition to develop.
The good news from this was that the other three quarterbacks were able to get increased reps.
Jon Hays continues to have a solid camp, leading the first team offense into the end zone in the two minute drill, starting with a terrific fade pass to Luke Matthews before hitting DeVonte Christopher in stride on an out route for a touchdown. And, mind you, this was against Utah's first team defense, minus Star Lotulelei. However, it wasn't all good for Hays, as the very first play the media was able to observe he threw a pick to Eric Rowe. I caught up with Rowe after practice, be sure to check out the video interview with him in the player above.
Travis Wilson had an OK day. It seemed like he trusts his legs far more than his arm right now, looking to run right away instead of staying in the pocket and allowing receivers to finish their routes. After getting smacked around pretty good this fall camp, I don't blame him for having a small case of "happy feet".
Adam Schultz has a cannon of an arm. He had multiple deep throws downfield where if not for a tremendous play by the defense (Lewis Walker had at least three of the breakups), he would have had touchdowns on each of them. The downside is that with all the attempts downfield, the offense stalled and had to settle for a field goal attempt.
As far as the kicking game is concerned, it looks like Coleman Petersen is back atop the depth chart. Petersen made all but one of his attempts in practice.
