North Summit 64, Millard 53

OGDEN — North Summit’s Kennady McQueen finished one rebound shy of a triple-double as the Braves ran past the Millard Eagles to reach the 2A state semifinals Thursday.

McQueen scored 22 points to go along with 11 assists and nine rebounds as North Summit topped Millard 64-53.

North Summit head coach Jerre Holmes said McQueen was able to get the job done on both sides of the floor.

“I know everybody gets caught up in the flash of her on the offensive end,” Holmes said, “but she’s equally as good on the defensive end.”

McQueen wasn’t the only Brave to make a big impact, as starters Gracie Watterson, Hadley Richins and Brecklyn Murdock each scored in double digits in the win.

“Kennady knows we can’t win with just her. … Those others are great role players and they do contribute,” Holmes said. “We can’t win without them.”

The Braves started the game off quick with a 9-0 run, but the Eagles responded with a 9-0 run of their own to tie the game. North Summit finished the quarter strong, however, using a 7-0 run to take a 16-9 advantage going into the second quarter.

North Summit kept that momentum going in the second quarter, hitting three 3-pointers on their way to a 31-19 halftime lead. The Braves hit four shots from behind the arc in the first half, two at the hands of McQueen and two from Richins.

North Summit maintained their double-digit lead throughout the third quarter before a Millard run cut the lead to seven, 36-29. The Braves would again respond, pushing the lead to 16 at 52-36 at the end of the third quarter thanks to a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from McQueen.

An 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter put the Braves up 60-36, and North Summit coasted to a 64-53 win.

While McQueen led the Braves with 22 points, Rylee Miller and Megan Wade each scored 16 points to lead the Eagles in the loss.

Kanab 64, Wasatch Academy 44

Kanab overcame a slow first quarter to beat Wasatch Academy in the final game of the 2A quarterfinals.

Coming into the game having only lost a combined four games this season, the Tigers and the Cowboys traded buckets for much of the first quarter. After Kanab hit a shot to make it a one-point game, Wasatch Academy came right back to take a 17-13 lead into the second quarter after Duda Raimundo banked in a 30-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Kanab would come out strong in the second quarter, however, using a 15-2 run to take a 30-22 lead. Wasatch Academy added another score to cut the Cowboys’ lead to 6, 30-24, at the half.

Kanab head coach Ben Luce said his team responded well in that second quarter after a slow start.

“It took us a minute to get going, but in that second quarter we buckled down and played defense,” Luce said. “That turned into some good offense for us.”

The Cowboys continued to build on their halftime lead in the third quarter, hitting three 3-pointers and finishing the quarter on a 10-3 run to take a 50-35 advantage into the fourth. Kanab kept things going in the fourth as well, slowly wearing down the Tigers on their way to a 64-44 win.

“We’re nine deep and I don’t lose anything defensively when I go to the bench,” Luce said. “That’s the key, to play good defense all the time.”

Brinley Cornell scored 18 and Jessi Anderson added 12 to lead the Cowboys. Nataly Dunka recorded 18 points and Raimundo pitched in 15 in the losing effort for the Tigers.

Kanab will take on North Summit at 4:10 p.m. Friday at the Dee Events Center in Ogden. Wasatch Academy will meet Millard at 11:10 a.m. Friday in the consolation side of the playoff bracket.
