SALT LAKE CITY — The second week of college football is in the books. Ten conference teams played non-league games, while Utah State and Air Force kicked off action within the MWC. Only two weeks have passed but the big picture outlook has become clearer.

Preseason favorites Fresno State and Boise State impressed with rather one-sided wins, while other teams predicted to contend for the league championship, like San Diego State and Air Force, are beginning to look more like pretenders.

AIR FORCE: Lost to Utah State 52-20

Though the Falcons beat Colgate 38-13 in their season opener, it came at a hefty price. Starting quarterback Kale Pearson suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of the victory. Luckily for AFA it was announced that Pearson will not need surgery that would sideline him for the rest of year, but his future playing status remains uncertain.

Sophomore Jaleel Awini made his first career start in Pearson's place, and fumbled on his first play under center. Awini was effective in the first half, leading the Falcons into the red zone on three separate occasions but was plagued by inconsistent play from his receivers. The Falcons came away with 13 points, but were left wondering what could've been as they finished the half with six drops. Awini was benched in the second half as the Falcons failed to score in the third quarter. The Aggies put 21 points on the board during the period, putting the game out of reach.

  • Totaled 120 yards of offense in the second half
  • Defensively allowed 360 yards passing
  • Next opponent: Boise State (1-1)

BOISE STATE: Beat Tennessee-Martin 63-14

#Poll

The Broncos dismantled the visiting Skyhawks to rebound from their week one beat down at the hands of Washington. Quarterback Joe Southwick was sharp in the win, going 17 of 25 for 234 yards and five touchdowns. Boise State ran their hurry-up offense to near perfection, extending their streak of consecutive home openers won to 12.

Tennessee-Martin quarterback Dylan Favre, nephew of former NFL star Brett Favre, kept the Skyhawks close in the first quarter by throwing his only touchdown of the game. The Broncos' defense did not surrender another point until they were ahead 63-7 in the fourth quarter.

  • Forced six turnovers
  • Rested the majority of their starters the final 25:49 of game action
  • Next opponent: Air Force (1-1)

COLORADO STATE: Lost to Tulsa 30-27

The Rams took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter before allowing 13 unanswered points to the Golden Hurricane, capped off by the game-winning field goal as time expired. Colorado State again struggled through the air; quarterback Garret Grayson completing 12 of his 29 passes for 108 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Kapri Bibbs and Chris Nwoke combined to lead the Rams' offense, rushing for 83 and 97 yards respectively. They will likely be the focal points of the offensive attack moving forward but CSU will need to develop some semblance of a passing game to create openings for their dual-headed rushing game.

  • Managed only seven second-half points
  • One of Grayson's 29 passes accounted for 52 of his total 109 yards through the air
  • Next opponent: Cal Poly (1-1)

FRESNO STATE: Beat Cal Poly 41-25

Special teams led the Bulldogs to the win, punt returner Isaiah Burse scoring two touchdowns on returns of 61 and 58 yards. Quarterback Derek Carr was solid, going 22 of 31 for 205 yards and three touchdowns one week after throwing 73 passes. BYU-transfer Josh Quezada chipped in with 65 yards on the ground.

The game was never as close as the final score would indicate. Fresno State took a 34-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Cal Poly outscored Fresno State 25-7 in the second half, a concern for the Bulldogs' coaching staff moving forward.

  • Balanced offensive attack finished with 208 yards passing and 162 yards rushing
  • Received 26 Top-25 votes, good for 27th best in the nation
  • Next opponent: Colorado (2-0)

HAWAII: Lost to Oregon State 33-14

The Rainbow Warriors were shutout after the halftime break and lost to a Pac-12 opponent for the second straight week. Hawaii gave up two Sean Mannion touchdown passes before tying the game at 14 before the first half ended. Mannion picked apart the Hawaii secondary to the tune of 372 yards passing and 4 touchdowns.

Norm Chow's team made it into Oregon State territory only twice in the second half, both occurrences coming with under five minutes remaining in the game. The Rainbow Warriors again used two quarterbacks but managed only 170 yards through the air. It appears Chow prefers Taylor Graham to Sean Schroeder as the starter for next week's game.

  • Returned an interception for a touchdown
  • Finished with 69 yards rushing
  • Next opponent: Nevada (1-1)

NEVADA: Beat UC Davis 36-7

Quarterback Cody Fajardo was almost flawless in the Wolf Pack's lopsided home opening win. Fajardo went 18 of 21 for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Fajardo added another score rushing. Standout wide receiver Richy Turner was the recipient of Fajardo's first touchdown pass and finished the game with six catches for 136 yards.

The Wolfpack gained 267 yards rushing, which allowed them to control the time of possession battle. Running back Kendall Brock led Nevada with 116 yards on the ground.

  • First win for head coach Brian Polian
  • Converted 11 of 19 third downs
  • Next opponent: Florida State (1-0)

NEW MEXICO: Beat UTEP 42-35 OT

In a rushing performance only outdone by BYU, the Lobos ran all over the Miners. New Mexico amassed 395 yards rushing, 291 of them coming from star running back Kasey Carrier, who also reached paydirt four times. Carrier finished with 41 rushes.

UTEP tied the game at 35 with just 1:19 left on the clock and New Mexico quarterback Clayton Mitchem was sacked to end regulation. Mitchem was filling in for injured starter Cole Gautsche. The Lobos called Carrier's number on all three offensive plays in overtime, his third carry good for 21 yards and the game-winning score.

  • Completed 4 of 7 passes for 88 yards
  • Finished with 57 total rushes
  • Next opponent: Pittsburgh (0-1)

SAN DIEGO STATE: Lost to Ohio State 42-7

#Poll2

One week after the Aztecs were embarrassed by FCS opponent Eastern Illinois, San Diego State fell in Columbus. Though the Buckeyes were without starting quarterback Braxton Miller for most of the game, their offense had no trouble scoring against the Aztec defense.

SDSU was finally able to get on the board in the third quarter but were already facing a 42-point deficit at that point. Aztec starting quarterback Adam Dingwell was benched after failing to complete a pass to a San Diego State receiver. Dingwell lasted just three series and was completely outplayed by his replacement, JUCO transfer Quinn Kaehler, who accounted for the lone touchdown. SDSU head coach Rocky Long has backed Dingwell despite his struggles but now appears poised to make the switch for good.

  • Gained 64 yards rushing
  • Committed four turnovers
  • Next opponent: Oregon State (1-1)

SAN JOSE STATE: Lost to Stanford 34-13

For the second straight year the Spartans had to travel to Palo Alto for an early season contest against the Cardinal. This time it wasn't so close. SJSU was able to kick a field goal to cut the Stanford lead to 11 points before halftime but were overwhelmed defensively the rest of the game.

Stanford was able to convert 12 of 15 third downs on the night. Much of the first downs came by way of the run, the Cardinal finishing with 197 yards rushing compared to just 35 for the Spartans. Quarterback David Fales put in a solid effort in the loss, going 29 of 43 for 216 yards and one touchdown. However, his lone interception came at a pivotal moment as the Spartan defense had just forced their only turnover on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Cardinal turned it into seven points for the final score of the game.

  • Penalties: Six for 57 yards
  • Three for four on fourth down conversions
  • Next opponent: Minnesota (2-0)

UNLV: Lost to Arizona 58-13

The Rebels gave up 50 or more points for the second time in as many weeks and were unable to generate much offense in the one-sided affair. Arizona running back Ka'Deem Carey returned from his suspension in the second quarter to the chagrin of UNLV. Carey picked up 110 yards in his first quarter of the season and finished with 171 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Nick Sherry put the Rebels on the board with a 69-yard strike early in the second quarter, but Carey took his first carry 58 yards for a touchdown on Arizona's next play from scrimmage. It was the only highlight of the game for Sherry, who ended the game 6 of 22 for 111 yards and two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns by the Wildcats. After the game UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck said, "Congratulations to Arizona for coming in and beating the hell out of us."

  • Allowed 397 yards rushing
  • Penalties: Eight for 70 yards
  • Next opponent: Central Michigan (1-1)

UTAH STATE: Beat Air Force 52-20

Chuckie Keeton and the Aggies cruised past AFA in their first conference game, a statement that the rest of the Mountain West undoubtedly noticed. The Falcons were able to hang close in the first half, thanks in large part to numerous Aggie penalties that extended Air Force drives.

The second half belonged to Utah State, manhandling the Falcons from the very start of the third quarter. Keeton recorded his second consecutive 300-yard passing game and tied the school-record that he also owns with five touchdowns. The Aggie defense only allowed the Falcons to cross midfield once after halftime.

  • Racked up 577 yards of total offense
  • Converted 11 of 15 third downs
  • Next opponent: Weber State (1-1)

WYOMING: Beat Idaho 42-10

Following a week in which the Cowboys fell in heartbreaking fashion to Nebraska despite out gaining the Huskers, Wyoming was able to get into the win column.

Quarterback Brett Smith vaulted up to eighth in the country in total passing yards just one spot ahead of USU's Chuckie Keeton. Smith went 22 of 38 for 295 yards, four touchdowns and one interception against the Vandals. He added another 64 yards on the ground to the Cowboys' 262-yard rushing total.

  • Gained over 550 yards of total offense for the second consecutive week
  • Collected seven sacks
  • Next opponent: Northern Colorado (1-1)
