Tom Kirkland: Where are you in terms of wanting to play, can play?
Danny Berger:I love basketball, it's brought me a lot of happiness, a lot of great memories, and a lot of friends; so I don't want to give that up. I've been shooting around a little bit, I'm trying to stay in shape, and I think I can get back to full strength. I think this will be a good year to mature as a person and I know it will help me on the court to be a good leader and a better teammate.
TK: You can go on to do the same things and you should be absolutely fine or better if you're in better shape.
DB: That's what the doctors are telling me, they're just warning me that psychologically it might be a bit difficult being back on the court, getting more comfortable, so that will take some time. I try not to think about it but it creeps in your mind a little bit about what happened. One of my coaches said, "it's scary to see you even run right now," and I said, "sorry man but I've got to do it." I think they're a little bit scared too. I still have to push myself though and I don't want to use it as an excuse; I've just got to pay more attention to my body, even though I really didn't feel anything before. I don't think I can totally get it out of my mind.
TK: Really?
DB: Maybe eventually but as of now, I don't know.
TK: Do you think that would hurt you on the court?
DB: I don't think so because I think when I'm in the moment, I'll be fine.
TK: Tell us your new nickname.
DB: Some of my teammates call me Iron Man or Tony Start because I got this defibrillator right here. They just mess around and call me that.
TK: How has it changed your big view of things?
DB: I was a missionary and I learned a lot about living, about how to live your life, and making correct decisions; it's been a huge reminder of those things. I know that I'm here, not only for one purpose or two purposes, but for a lot of reasons and I'm just trying to figure out what those things are. I know I'm going to go through my entire life wondering about those things and trying to accomplish the reasons that I'm still alive.
