Utah State defeats Weber 65-55, behind late surge

LOGAN, Utah - A late run by Utah State and missed shots by Weber State gave the Aggies a 65-55 victory Saturday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

With the game tied at 53-53 with 5:00 to play Utah State went on a 12-2 run to close out the game and seal their ninth straight win over the Wildcats in Logan.

The game was back-and-forth until the final few minutes. In the first 35 minutes there were 24 lead changes and 16 ties before Utah State posted a 6-0 run to break a tie.

Weber State shot just 24 percent from the field in the second half and was 14-24 from the free throw line in the second half, while Utah State was 20-27 from the line in the second period.

For the game the Wildcats shot just 34 percent from the field but did not make a field goal in the final 7:30 of the game. The ‘Cats were 16-29 from the free throw line.

"I was proud of our effort and I thought we fought hard, it just came down to missing shots that we needed," said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. "With five minutes to go we were tied and they made their shots and we missed them. We missed 13 free throws and you just can't do that to a team like Utah State, especially at home."

Weber State was led by Davion Berry who posted 11 points on 5-14 shooting but was just 1-5 from the free throw line. Jordan Richardson added nine points and Frank Otis posted eight points. James Hajek tied his career-high with eight rebounds and added four points. All nine Wildcats that played scored at least three points.

"Utah State executed down the stretch and we couldn't and that was the difference," Berry said. "We missed our free throws and committed a lot of fouls and couldn't make our shots when we needed to."

Utah State was led by Preston Medlin who scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Jarred Shaw posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds on 7-12 shooting. Ben Clifford added 11 points off the bench.

The Aggies outrebounded the Wildcats 43-30 and shot 46 percent from the field.

With the loss WSU falls to 1-3 on the season. The Wildcats will be back on the road next Wednesday when they take on the Dayton Flyers in Dayton, Ohio. Dayton is 4-1 on the season.
