John McCain tours Arizona temple with Sandra Day O'Connor

GILBERT, Ariz. — Sen. John McCain recently toured the new temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gilbert, Ariz. with Sandra Day O'Connor and fellow Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake.

The temple was open to the public during an open house. McCain tweeted about his experience Feb. 17.

"Toured the new Mormon Temple in #Gilbert, AZ yesterday w/ @JeffFlake and Sandra Day O'Connor — a beautiful facility," he wrote.

O'Connor is a native of Arizona and served two terms as a state senator before becoming a U.S. Supreme Court justice. Flake was elected to the Senate for Arizona in 2012 and is a member of the LDS Church.

The open house for the Gilbert Temple ended on Feb. 15 and the building will be dedicated on March 2. It is the fourth LDS temple in the state of Arizona.

The Gilbert Arizona Temple is the largest temple the LDS Church has constructed in 17 years, according to LDS Church News. It is 85,000 square feet and has five levels.
