SALT LAKE CITY — It's that time of the year when the NFL kicks off its season. One former University of Utah player got some good news right before he and his team started their 2013 season.
Miami Dolphins linebacker Koa Misi played for the Utes from 2007 to 2009, during which he only missed one game. When he declared for the NFL draft, Miami took him in the second round with the 40th pick.
Misi was headed into this season on the final year of his four-year rookie contract, and on Saturday he signed a four-year extension with the Dolphins, which is reportedly worth $17 million with $9 million guaranteed.
Misi is coming off his best season in Miami, where he had 3.5 sacks and a career-high 65 tackles. In his first game after signing the new deal, a Sunday 23-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns, he had 5 tackles.
Another former Ute on the Dolphins roster, Paul Soliai, who is also playing the final year of his current contract, is working to get a contract extension as well. Follow David Winkworth at @Davito23.
