SALT LAKE CITY — Former Utah Utes quarterback Alex Smith may have found a new home with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to sources close to the trade.

The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly reached an agreement with the Chiefs to trade Smith for a second-round pick in 2013 and a second-round pick in 2014, according to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury-News.

Although it appears as though the trade is a done deal, no deal can be made official until March 12, which means the 49ers can continue to shop Smith around if a better deal comes along. However, Kawakami said the trade talks "are very far along."

Smith was drafted No. 1 overall by the 49ers in the 2005 draft after leading the Utes to a Fiesta Bowl victory over Pittsburgh in 2004. Smith was the team's starting quarterback until he suffered a concussion in the second quarter against the St. Louis Rams mid-season. Second-year backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick replaced Smith and was named the starting quarterback a week later.

Smith completed 18-of-19 passes for 232 yards before being sidelined by his concussion. Once Smith lost his starting spot, and as Kaepernick appeared to be the future for the 49ers, rumors about a possible trade started.

Smith is expected to play under the same terms of his contract with San Francisco, according to ESPN, which is a base salary of $8.5 million in 2013. Sources close to the deal have not said whether a new contract has been discussed between the Chiefs and Smith.

The Chiefs, which hired Andy Reid to be its head coach in the offseason, are expected to release former starting quarterback Matt Cassel. Cassel has two years left on a six-year deal he signed with the Chiefs.
