When Danny Macfarlane decided to open his business, Civil Solutions Group, in 2009, the timing wasn't ideal to say the least. The economy was challenged, but he had been planning his venture for years while working professionally as an engineer in training. Once he had his engineering license, he decided to go for it.
Civil Solutions Group is focused on sustainable civil engineering and planning. Danny says every design is meant to last a long time with water and infrastructure, created in an appealing and beautiful way. The main driver of their designs is their vision statement which includes five different principles: beautiful and enduring places, planning healthy communities, designing sustainable sites, providing science-based environmental solutions and guiding renewable energy resources.
For the first two years, Danny was the sole employee of Civil Solutions Group, but he made a list of all his contacts and starting building his new business one job and one relationship at a time. He carefully covered expenses, found a professional landscape architect and watched his business grow. Today, Civil Solutions Group has 9 employees on board and an office in Salt Lake City, in addition to their headquarters in Providence.
Civil Solutions Group has a wide customer base including architects, municipalities and universities. Their reputation for city planning has helped them get work with North Ogden, Brigham City, Vineyard, South Salt Lake and North Logan. They're also giving back by doing at least one community project every year for reduced or no cost. Their success speaks for itself with 90 percent of their work coming from referrals.
With the population along the Wasatch Front projected to double in the next 50 years, creating sustainable design will continue to gain business relevance, especially with the need for water conservation. Danny says this is a major factor for the Civil Solutions Group tagline, "Leaders of sustainable engineering and planning."
