The benefits of therapeutic recreation are extensive. Research has shown this type of therapy helps with everything from improved cognitive and physical skills to emotional well-being and a decrease in behavioral problems. The team at the National Ability Center in Park City specializes in recreational therapy, and they witness the impact daily.

The mission of the National Ability Center is to empower individuals of all abilities by building self-esteem, confidence and lifetime skills through sport, recreation and education programs so they can live a more fulfilled life. Executive Director Gail Loveland says the goal for National Ability Center is to increase Utah's accessibility for recreation, which takes a lot of dedicated work.

Gail was recruited by National Ability Center from Seattle five years ago. She brings 20 years of experience in non-profit program development, administration and recreation. One of the strengths she has is her ability to successfully grow nonprofits and keep them sustainable. Gail and her team of 125 employees are doing their job so well that Gail was recently selected as a finalist for the Ernst and Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year award.

The mission of these sport, recreation and education programs at The National Ability Center is to challenge yourself and your abilities so you can set and reach goals. Gail says they've developed a solid base in Park City that allows them to reach out to people throughout Utah and draw participants, volunteers and supporters from a national and international audience. Her team also works with corporations, non-profits and government organizations to educate them about the unique strengths people with different abilities can bring to their organization.

With their military initiative, The National Ability Center is working with Salt Lake City's VA Hospital, Wounded Project, Camp Williams and others to find engagement in the community and support veterans in finding employment.
