This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

In today's competitive business world, an education is essential to advance and provide the best career opportunities. A study from the Pew Research Center found that college graduates age 25 to 32 were earning around $17,500 more than their peers with a high school diploma. For some people that means a traditional four-year degree but universities aren't the best fit for others. Terry Keyes and the faculty of Davis Applied Technology College in Kaysville are trying to open the way for more students to have important educational opportunities.

DATC is one of the largest technical colleges in the state, with last year's enrollment topping out at approximately 6,200 students. Programs start any time throughout the year. Davis Applied Technology College offers 30 different programs to help you learn a skill in as little as three months, or as comprehensively as 17. Most programs cost under $6,500, and 88 percent of students have a job within 30 days of graduation. To give you an idea of how important this type of education is, Utah currently has positions open for 345 welders they can't fill.

Course offerings at Davis Applied Technology College include nursing and surgical tech training, dental assisting, cosmetology, culinary arts, auto mechanics, welding and many in-demand trade programs. In fact, one company even sponsors the welding program and is only too willing to hire students as they complete it. Williams International, a leading developer for small gas turbine engines around the country, is another big supporter of DATC. Once students complete their 300 hours of class time and a 600-hour internship, they'll not only hire students but also pay tuition and provide benefits.

Davis Applied Technology College is employer-focused so part of the program is their employer advisory committee, which sits down twice a year to give advice on trends and skills. Students are taught to understand these trends when entering the workforce. To that extent, they encourage students to work in the professional world with the skills learned in the classroom.
