As technology advances and continues to be an economic engine in the United States, it's important for Utah to maintain our place among technology hotspots. Technology is one of the state's major industries, representing over 14 percent of the state's total payroll with around 100,000 jobs that bring 7 billion dollars in business to the state.
You can count ZIGG Design in that total. In just two and a half years, this Logan company has grown to 10 employees with projections to double by year end. Dan Gerbec (grr-beck), one of the company's founders, says ZIGG Design is a medical device incubator, and they specialize in product development. See, medical professionals with a device in mind come to them, and the ZIGG team helps them turn the idea into a reality, then navigate the tricky regulatory environment to launch the product.
Their area of expertise is the orthopaedic industry. They've helped create devices for surgical repair of joints, like torn ACLs or knee or hip replacements. In fact, Dan says Cache Valley is developing a strong industry and economic engine around creation of orthopaedic devices. While Warsaw, Indiana remains the capital of the world's orthopaedics industry, Cache Valley is becoming the "Warsaw West."
Dan says the partnership between the three founders at ZIGG Design works out well. His background is in mechanical engineering and the other two founders, Gordon Baker and Joel Devver (dee-ver) are skilled machinists. The three of them combined hold around 35 patents for devices they've created during their career. They've developed solutions to orthopaedic challenges as well as cardiovascular and ENT.
