ST. GEORGE — The Stansbury Stallions had never won a state championship in the school's four years of existence.
That changed on Saturday.
The Stansbury softball team defeated Spanish Fork 6-3 to win the 3A state softball championship.
"I just love my teammates so much," said catcher Joclyn Kaufman. "I wouldn't want to play this game with anyone else. All these girls are so amazing. I just want to live this moment forever."
Stansbury needed just one win over Spanish Fork Dons to claim the title, but the Dons defeated the Stallions 9-3 to force a winner-take-all second game.
Stansbury found themselves trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the second inning when Elise Sutherland evened the score with a two-run home run. Janessa would score later in the inning on a passed ball, and Stansbury never trailed again.
Kimbri Herring pitched a complete game and struck out five batters to get the victory.
