PLAIN CITY — Turkey, stuffing and fresh slices of apple pie are not the only things on some boys' minds this time of year. Fremont High's boys basketball team will be breaking away from the feasts of Thanksgiving to hit the hardwood next week, hoping to surprise some people with its new, uptempo offense.

Last year's team finished 12-10 and featured Region 1 MVP Brock Smith at forward. At 6-foot-5 and 209 pounds, Smith was the main cog in the low post, averaging 19.8 points and pulling down 10.5 rebounds per game. However, he has moved on to play at Snow College, so Fremont has some big shoes to fill this winter.

"It's obvious we have lost some size from last year, but the lack of size has really made us seniors step up and lead," said Kade Criswell, a senior forward for the Silver Wolves. "Fremont is usually known for a traditional playing style with a point guard, two interchangeable wings and two bigs. This year we moved to a 'run-and-gun' style — small and fast."

Fremont opens the season against Mountain Crest at home Tuesday, Nov. 27.

In addition to Smith, Fremont also needs to replace Rowdy Stucki, the starting point guard from last year's squad who averaged 2.9 assists per game. This year's team will rely on senior guard Jordan Preator, who was second on the team in assists last year with 2.1 per game. Preator also led the team in steals with an average of 1.8 per game, so the Wolves hope his defense will lead to some easy fast-break opportunities.

All in all, the Silver Wolves are ready to get on the court and see what they can do. "Last year was a great group of players, but a different type of play. I am way excited for this year and I hope for the best," said Criswell.

The boys at Fremont hope this Thanksgiving season will be one to remember — and not just because of the food.
