SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A fraternity at the University of Utah has been shut down by its national office.

Beta Theta Pi's national office, based in Oxford, Ohio, cited years of failure to improve bad behavior at the nearly century-old chapter.

The chapter will resume recruiting in the fall of 2011 after a $500,000 renovation of the house.

The fraternity's administrative secretary says a suspension is necessary to restore the reputation of the chapter and preserve its presence at the university.

The fraternity has 120 chapters. The chapter at the University of Utah has 40 undergraduate members. Thirteen live at the chapter's house.
