Salt Lake City — It looks like Jason Kidd's retirement from basketball will be short lived. He is expected to be the new head coach for the Brooklyn Nets; is John Stockton next?

Kidd entered the NBA a decade after Stockton, but their careers followed very similar paths.

Each was the quarterback for their team. Old-school, pass-first point guards that were loved by coaches, hated by rival fans, and respected by opponents.

Except for rebounding, Stockton has an advantage in virtually every statistical category, but Kidd has beaten him into the coaching ranks.

Stockton is to blame because he hasn't entered the game. Immediately after Stockton hung up his well-worn shoes, the questions began.

"When are you going to start coaching?"

He's been asked a thousand times, in virtually every interview that he has given since his retirement.

But after spending 19 years on the road, Stockton has decided to stay at home; coach his kid's little league teams and play some pick-up ball.

He's also admitted that coaching is likely in his future, but on his timetable and nobody else's.

The Jazz have a long list of former players that have turned to the head coaching ranks:

Rick Adelman (1974-75), Tyrone Corbin (1991-94), Adrian Dantley (1979-1986), Henry Bibby (1975-76), Allan Bristow (1979-81), Jeff Hornacek (1994-2000), Marc Iavaroni (1985-89), Mark Jackson (2002-03), Jeff Judkins (1980-81), Larry Krystkowiak (1992-93), Jim Les (1988-89), Randy Livingston (2004-05), Kenny Natt (1982-83, 1984-85), Kelly Tripucka (1986-88), and Jacque Vaughn (1997-01).

There may be a few more of the nearly 200 Jazz players that I am missing.

The fact is, from the outside looking in, it seems that of all these former players the greatest all-time coach on the floor was John Stockton. Not just in a Jazz uniform, but any uniform, ever.

I can't envision a scenario where John Stockton doesn't enter the coaching ranks. It's as inevitable as a Krispy Kreme donut disappearing in Charles Barkley's presence.

One thing is for certain, when John decides to enter the coaching game, I wouldn't want to be the incumbent Jazz coach.
