SALT LAKE CITY — Defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley isn’t going anywhere.
The University of Utah football program announced Monday that it has amended the long-time coordinator and former Utah safety’s contract in a “long-term” deal with Utah. The details of his contract, however, were not given.
"We are excited to announce that Morgan Scalley will continue to be a part of Utah football for years to come," Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said in a written statement. "Morgan's impact on our program as both a player and a coach has been invaluable to our success."
Scalley, who has been the defensive coordinator since 2016 and with the program in some coaching capacity since 2008, was rumored to be a possible candidate for the UNLV head coaching vacancy, as well as numerous other programs around the country.
"I'm grateful to be in this position, and fully committed to the Utah Football family," Scalley said in a written statement. "I sincerely appreciate coach Whittingham and (athletic director) Mark Harlan for their trust and belief in me. I love this place, my family loves it here, and I am excited to continue working with our staff and players to build something special at the University of Utah."
Scalley is a finalist for the 2019 Broyles Award, which is given to the nation’s top assistant coach, and has continued to put Utah’s defense on the map each year since he took over as the team’s defensive coordinator. Utah closed out the regular season with the No. 1 rush defense in the country and a No. 3 defense overall.
Earlier this year, Scalley received a salary increase to $820,000 annually and a new two-year contract after his previous two-year contract signed in 2018 for $525,000 annually. The amended details to his new contract extension, however, have not been publicly released at this time.
Utah secures Scalley long-term amid a vital recruiting season as the Utes attempt to bring in a strong class as the NCAA’s early signing period begins Dec. 18. Already this week, Scalley and Whittingham were seen visiting the state of Utah’s No. 2 overall recruit in Van Fillinger from Corner Canyon High School.
