PROVO — After working under former Utah State head coach Gary Andersen in Logan and at the University of Wisconsin for the past four years, Zach Nyborg is returning to Provo.

BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced Tuesday that Nyborg has been named director of football operations, the same position he occupied in Madison, Wisc., in 2013-14.

“Zach is an individual of high moral values and character who brings experience, knowledge and innovative thinking to a position that is of utmost importance to a football program,” Mendenhall said in a press release. “He will play a significant role in the continued success of our program.”

A native of Centerville, Nyborg served as assistant to the head coach, recruiting coordinator and as a graduate assistant during three years at Utah State, starting in 2010. He graduated from BYU in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in business management.

“I am ready to get to work and excited to be a part of the BYU football family,” Nyborg said in the release. “This is the right fit for me, and I am grateful to Coach Mendenhall and Tom Holmoe for the opportunity to be a part of the great tradition of BYU football and to begin building relationships with the players, coaches and staff.”

Nyborg handled the day-to-day operations of the program while at Wisconsin, which included team schedules, travel, practice preparation, overseeing the football budget as well as supervising the Badgers’ recruiting and support staff.

“I would not be here today without Coach Andersen,” Nyborg said. “He has been a father figure, true friend and a tremendous mentor and leader that has given me every opportunity to succeed. The Andersen family is family to me. I am grateful to Coach Andersen, the staffs at Wisconsin and Utah State and their families for letting me be a part of their football family and for the special moments we have shared.”

Before joining the Aggies staff, Nyborg coached at Timpview High School as the head freshman coach and offensive coordinator, and worked with the quarterbacks and receivers on the sophomore team.

BYU had been without a director of football operations since last month, when Duane Busby retired following 13 years in the capacity and nearly 20 as a member of the BYU football staff.
