WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's president has presented the U.S. ambassador with a prestigious honor for his service to the country.
President Bronislaw Komorowski on Tuesday bestowed the award on Stephen Mull, an unusually popular ambassador thanks to his close engagement with Poles and his fluent Polish.
Mull, who leaves his post later this year, also served in Poland in the 1980s, when the country was still under communist rule, and in the 1990s, the early years of its democratic transition.
Mull has been an unusual ambassador at times, tweeting frequently and skydiving for the first time in his life with Polish troops to show American support for the country as a resurgent Russia has created nervousness in Poland.
The president cited Mull's contribution to promoting Poland's freedom and helping improve the county's security.
