NEW YORK (AP) — A former New York University graduate student has sued a prominent professor, alleging she sexually harassed and stalked him for more than three years.

The lawsuit was filed by Nimrod Reitman on Wednesday in state Supreme Court in Manhattan against the university and professor Avital Ronell. It followed an investigation by the university that concluded Ronell sexually harassed Reitman.

The lawsuit says NYU failed to take action earlier after Reitman told a vice provost about the misconduct. It says Reitman suffered humiliation, reputational harm and mental anguish and seeks unspecified damages.

NYU spokesman John Beckman says the university suspended Ronell after a thorough investigation and a lawsuit was not "warranted or just."

Ronell has publicly denied harassing Reitman and says he had welcomed their sometimes "florid and campy" communications.
