WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — The fourth and final suspect in the slaying three years ago of a former high school football star in Massachusetts has pleaded guilty days before his trial was scheduled to start.
Jovante Daye had faced a first-degree murder charge in the May 2015 shooting death in Worcester of 18-year-old Sam Castro, but pleaded guilty Thursday to voluntary manslaughter and other charges. He faces at least 15 to 16 years in prison at sentencing Friday.
The 21-year-old Daye was one of four people involved in the death of Castro, which prosecutors said was "partly related to gang activity."
Prosecutors say Castro — a former football standout at Worcester North High School — was walking with a gang member when he was shot, but was not a gang member himself.
