CENTERVILLE, Utah (AP) — Authorities in Utah have released police body camera and vehicle dashboard video showing a vehicle chase and the sounds of a fatal shooting last summer of a 32-year-old man who officials said eluded officers several times and refused to stop a stolen car not far from where Independence Day parade crowds were forming.
Centerville Police Chief Paul Child told reporters Thursday that investigators analyzed more than 55 hours of footage from various cameras in a probe that cleared Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Chamberlin Neff in the July 4, 2017, death of Cody McCray.
Some officers were wearing body cameras but Child said Neff was not at the time of the shooting, the Standard-Examiner reported.
Videos show police and highway patrol vehicles colliding several times with a red sedan that spins and heads the wrong way on the divided highway before it veers into the median of a parkway.
A grass fire spreads from beneath the red car as police vehicles and officers with guns drawn surround the red car, which continues to move.
Clouds from fire extinguishers obscure some views as three gunshots are heard, followed by a fourth.
Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings decided not to press charges against Neff, after deeming the shooting "lawful, proper, and in effort to ensure public safety."
Child said McCray stole the car the night before the shooting and led police in several pursuits in Davis County.
Authorities became concerned the following day when McCray drove toward Centerville and West Bountiful parade areas, the police chief said.
