HOUSTON (AP) — A federal jury in Houston has found a Brazilian couple guilty of kidnapping for helping their daughter flee Texas for Brazil with her young son.

But the jury acquitted Carlos and Jemima Guimaraes on Friday of related conspiracy charges.

Authorities say the couple helped their daughter, Marcelle Guimaraes, kidnap their grandson from Texas and keep him in Brazil for five years, in violation of a custody order.

The two were arrested in February after they flew to Miami.

Attorney Rusty Hardin says the couple believes their daughter is a victim of domestic violence.

The daughter, Marcelle Guimaraes, has also been indicted and remains in Brazil with her 8-year-old son, Nico.

The boy's American father lives in Houston. He has appeared at congressional hearings lobbying for the boy's return.
