INDIO, Calif. (AP) — Three girls and their driver suffered minor injuries when a bus carrying cheerleaders home to Phoenix was struck by a big rig on Interstate 10 in the California desert.

The California Highway Patrol says the charter bus was in traffic that slowed to a stop Wednesday afternoon 35 miles east of Palm Springs.

The truck was unable to stop and struck the bus, crossed the median and was engulfed in flames but the driver got out.

The fire was put out by firefighters but the westbound lanes of the interstate were shut down for three hours.

The injured girls were part of group that was heading home from a cheerleading competition at the University of California, Los Angeles.

This crash remains under investigation but drugs and alcohol are not suspected.
