PORTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say two people have died after the car they were riding in slid into the path of a pickup truck on a snowy southwestern Michigan roadway.

The Van Buren County Sheriff's Department said Monday the crash killed 22-year-old Jaylen Weller and 20-year-old Kylie Benkert, both of Dowagiac.

It says a preliminary investigation found Weller lost control of his car on Michigan highway 40 before fishtailing into the oncoming lane Sunday in Porter Township. The Kalamazoo Gazette reports the pickup driver tried unsuccessfully to swerve to miss the car. The 36-year-old driver of the pickup wasn't hurt.

The snow storm that tracked across Michigan on Sunday also caused scattered power outages affecting several thousand people in the west of the state. The Detroit area experienced rain and slippery roads.
