SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah school district is one of 11 school districts nationwide to settle a federal complaint related to poor website access for some disabled students.
Granite School District joined 10 other districts from Montana to Guam in a settlement that will make online courses easier to access as part of an agreement with the U.S. Department of Education.
Previous investigations found that on all 11 websites important images were missing text descriptions, called "alt tags." The tags describe the images to blind and low-vision users who use special software. Probes also found that some videos were not accurately captioned.
The settlement agreement promises that the districts will look at current practices and work to meet certain accessibility requirements within the next 18 months.
