OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — A cyberattack by an unknown hacker has forced a school district to shut down all of its servers.
Multiple news outlets report the Oxford School District was the victim of a crypto-ransomware attack, which began early Sunday morning.
The school district said in a news release that ransomware is a type of malware that infects a computer and restricts access to it until a ransom is paid to unlock it.
Superintendent Brian Harvey says instruction was disrupted because of the ransomware. The school district says the cyberattack locked out students, teachers and administrators from gaining access to computer programs and files. It also says no personal information or any critical data was compromised following the cyberattack.
Harvey says the district hopes to have the Internet up and running by Tuesday.
