YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) — Eastern Michigan University alum and ABC's "Modern Family" co-producer Sally Young told students at her alma mater Sunday that they need to invest in themselves.
Young, who spoke during the Ypsilanti school's commencement ceremonies that their "trust fund" should include more than money. She told students to cultivate good friends and health, as well as mentors, morals and the motivation to give back, The Ann Arbor News reported (http://bit.ly/1Euu386 ).
The goal, she said, is to be ready when life requires or offers change.
"Leave all these sets of currency in your trust fund ... in case you ever need it," she said. "Be sure to invest in that trust fund so you can have a full tank if you decide to leave a situation at any time if it does not serve you."
Young graduated from Eastern in 1972 and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts degree. The Emmy-winning "Modern Family" comedy series began its sixth season last fall.
The television theme continued in the comments of Desmond Miller, Eastern Michigan's student body president. He shared the words of fictional teacher Mr. Feeney from "Boy Meets World," who told his students to "believe in yourselves, dream, try, do good."
Former Detroit Lions quarterback Charlie Batch spoke later and received an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree. He played football at Eastern Michigan and graduated in 1997.
