South Carolina visit leaves Obama 2 states short of 50

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — President Barack Obama is making his first trip to South Carolina as president, leaving him two states shy of visiting all 50 while in the White House.

The remaining two states are South Dakota and Utah.

Obama arrived Friday in Columbia for a town hall meeting at historically black Benedict College. Columbia is the capital and the state's largest city,

The White House says he plans to address the efforts young people have made throughout history to expand opportunity.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest has no explanation for why the president didn't visit South Carolina before Friday.

Earnest says Obama has fond memories of the state's 2008 presidential primary, which Obama won. He adds that "there would be no President Barack Obama" without the "dramatic showing" in that contest.
