INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — In an April 7 story about ice on the Great Lakes interfering with steel production, The Associated Press reported erroneously that production at U.S. Steel's Gary Works had stopped for a week. Production was scaled back but not shut down.

Crews keep up work to clear Great Lakes shipping pathways, after ore shortage hit steel mill

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — U.S. Steel says its largest mill is on limited production after a shortage of iron ore due to the ice covering Lake Superior shut down two of its three furnaces.

Company spokeswoman Courtney Boone said Monday that ships were able to bring ore to the sprawling Gary Works on Sunday despite lingering ice from the frigid winter. She would not specify the level of production or estimate the slowdown's cost. She said U.S Steel hopes to get more ore to the mill this week.

The Gary Works mill generates steel for industries such as construction and auto manufacturing. Boone says the mill was able to operate off stockpiles for some time before the ice began affecting production.

A spokesman for the Great Lakes shipping industry says iron ore stockpiles are running low in many places and coal shipments in March were down 70 percent from a year ago.
